Sierra Leone adopted the UNESCO World Heritage Convention as State Number 179

On the 7 January 2005 Sierra Leone officially celebrated the Adoption of the UNESCO-World Heritage Convention with Koïchiro Matsuura the Director-General of UNESCO. Now 179 State Parties have ratified the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and natural Heritage.

The UNESCO World Heritage Convention

The General Conference of UNESCO adopted the Convention concerning the Protection of World Cultural and Natural Heritage on 16 November 1972.

All state parties (that have ratified the convention) are now together responsible for the safeguarding of cultural and natural sites of outstanding universal value.

The World Heritage Committe decides during its anually meeting about new
inscriptions in the UNESCO World Heritage list.

The World Heritage Centre in Paris is the coordinator within UNESCO for all matters related to World Heritage.
