ICOMOS, the International Council on Monuments and Sites has 21
International Scientific Committees.

One of it is called CIVVIH, the International Committee on
Historic Towns and Villages
.

On its website it is described as follows:

The International Committee on Historic Towns and Villages (CIVVIH) was established by the ICOMOS Executive Committee on December 12, 1982. The Committee deals with questions relevant to the planning and management of historic towns and villages.

Its membership is made of experts who have different professional backgrounds related to historic town preservation. They come from ICOMOS member countries all over the world to share their knowledge and experience with colleagues practicing in the field.

The Aims of CIVVIH are:

  • Further the acquisition of knowledge and the establishment of principles and guidelines for the conservation of historic towns, villages and ensembles;
  • Promote the integration of preservation planning and management practices in local development strategies;
  • Raise the interest of the public as well as of the national and local authorities for the preservation of historic towns and villages;
  • Support the sharing of knowledge and experience between its members;
  • Encourage training, research and publications in the field of urban conservation;
  • Provide technical assistance in relevant areas of
    expertise
