Heritage at Risk: 20th Century Cultural Heritage
Today i read through the ICOMOS Reports about Monuments and Sites in Danger. They are published since 2000 annualy.
A noteworthy article on the protection of 20th century architekture (20th-Century Heritage: Recognition, Protection and Practical Challenges) can be found in the latest report for 2002 (ICOMOS WORLD REPORT 2002-2003 ON MONUMENTS AND SITES IN DANGER).
The discussion about 20th century architecture and its protection is pretty popular in germany at the moment.
Susan Macdonald, Assistant Director of the NSW Heritage Office (Parramatta, Australia) is wirting in this ICOMOS Report about the problem, that 20th-Century architecture often is not recognized as much as architecture from 19th-century or before. A central issue is the not very well examined new bulding materials that have been used. In her conclusion she hopes that now, as we have reached the 21st century, the 20th century objects will soon be treated equally.
But still in many cities the qualities of this architecture must be taught to a lot of people.
At least in germany the friends of >modern< 20th century architecture are outnumbered.
